THIS WEEK WE ARE LEARNING ABOUT THE…
Letter: U
ACTIVITIES
Craft Time
Letter U for umbrella bird
Prep: cut out all pieces of construction paper (the back paper is 4×6), you can click on the template below to save and print. Make an example for them to follow and don’t forget google eyes!
Upside Down Pineapple Cake
Prep: You’ll need a can of sliced pineapple, maraschino cherries, a pineapple cake mix (and ingredients for it), brown sugar and butter and a large muffin pan. I let the kids help with every process from pouring the eggs, oil and pineapple juice, to blending it, to helping pour it into the pan. First you’ll mix a little brown sugar and melted butter together and spread it at the bottom of each pan (sprayed with cooking spray). Then put a pineapple slice inside the bottom (you may have to cut a slit and overlap part of it) and a cherry in the hole. Then mix the cake mix with other ingredients, blend and pour into the muffin pans. We talked about how we were making the cake upside down so the pineapple would be on top. While it cooked we did the other activities. Then when it was ready and cool enough to flip we let them come watch and then enjoyed it with our snack. They absolutely loved getting to help make their snack!
Underwear
Prep: You’ll need a tie dye kit or some fabric paint/markers (however you want to paint your design) and some white underwear. We had a might bit too much fun with all the tie dye from last week that we couldn’t resist pulling it back out again to do the kids underwear! You can always use something else but since I had it on hand and didn’t mind if the colors were weaker we reused the dye with a few newer bottles mixed in. Since we are all working towards potty training, it was a fun activity to let them create their own underwear they can proudly wear!
Upside down umbrella utensil toss
Prep: You’ll need an umbrella and some plastic utensils. Mark a line and open the umbrella upside down. Then give them utensils to toss and try to ring the umbrella. If you have more than one umbrellas and enough space you can open up several and number them to see how many they can get in each.
United States
Prep: United States puzzles and a coloring map with crayons. First let them color in with one color the state they were born, then with another color the states they have visited and then the third color the states they want to go to. We had several USA puzzles, so everyone got to use one after and put it together.
Under
Prep: Nothing needed for this game! Just have them count how many things they can find to get under!
Up
Prep: Nothing needed for this game either! Just sing the Noble Duke of York and let them get faster and faster with their “up” and “down”
Fill your balloon up
Prep: You’ll need a bottle with a 1/3 filled with white vinegar. Have a small measuring cup of baking soda, funnels and balloons. Let them help use the funnel to fill the baking soda into the balloon. Then wrap the mouth of the balloon around the top of the bottle but leave it limp. Then when secured on and ready, let the child lift the balloon up so the contents of the baking soda dump into the bottle and begin to quickly fill up the balloon.
Story Time
Underground
Elijah going “Up” into the clouds (Our children’s Bible didn’t have the story of Uzziah and this story had the most “u” words I could find!)
